The Trilingual ChatboxのMaiです。

Hi, Japanese language learners, I`m Mai from The Trilingual Chatbox. In this episode, I am going to talk about “My most memorable event in school”.

There are many school events I used to like, but the most memorable one should be Taiikusai, sports day in junior high school. Taiikusai is literally the festival of sports. Sports day is called Taiikusan in junior high school, but it is called Undoukai in kindergarten and elementary school. I have never thought about the difference between these two words, but as I got curious, I checked it this time.

First, it says Taiikusai is the event students show the result of their physical education classes. On the other hand, the purpose of Undoukai is to have kids do physical exercise. There are similar events in Undoukai and Taiikusai. For example, both include relay races, sprints, and so on.  In elementary school, students perform a dance they have been practicing as well.

The special event at Taiikusai in junior high school must be a cheering competition. The number of teams depends on the size of the school, in the case of my junior high school, there were three teams, and each team had a different color. They are white from white tigers, red from red lions, and blue from blue dragons. Everyone wears a headband of their own team color. Each team has a head and members of the cheerleaders, and they lead the other students to cheer during the event. Each team cheers their team using dance moves, shouts and songs they prepared in advance.  That doesn’t exist in elementary school`s Undoukai and junior high school kids are more purely passionate than high school students in my opinion. It is really like the power of youth, isn’t it? It makes me want to go back and experience it again.

The lunch we eat during Undoukai or Taiikusai is also a big event. Now, there are schools that hold Sports Day in spring, but when I was a kid, many schools had Sports Day in autumn, so Sports Day reminds me of the picnic lunch which includes autumn foods such as chestnuts, sweet potatoes and Japanese pears. We all ate the lunch our parents made on the picnic blanket in the schoolyard. It was a bit like a potluck party. The most major menus for Sports Day are rice balls, big sushi rolls, Japanese fried chicken, inari zushi, chestnut rice, and omelets. Out of all menus, my favorite was Pork cutlet roll sushi which my mom made. How about you? What kind of school events do you use to like?
