Hello, I’m the host of the Trilingual Chatbox, I’m Lori. Today I’m gonna talk about my favorite place in Japan. The proficiency level is around HSK level 3. Feel free to pause and take a look at today’s vocabulary words from the descriptions, and then continue playing. So, let’s get started.

There are many picturesque attractions in Japan, and just like Mai-san, I love Kyoto very much. The streets and shrines everywhere have an antique feel to them, and there’s also gourmet restaurants to serve food like boiled tofu (ゆどうふ) and matcha green tea. All these qualities are the reasons why this city appeals to me so much. However, there’s another tourist attraction that is on a par with Kyoto in my mind, and that’s Hokkaido.

As an island itself, Hokkaido is twice the size of Taiwan with a much higher latitude, and thus a lot colder for a much longer time. Therefore, Hokkaido also has sceneries that can’t be found in other parts of Japan. Summer heat bothers me a lot, so Hokkaido in summer is the perfect place for me. The average temperature in summer there is only between 20 to 22 degrees celsius, and in cities or towns such as Furano and Biei, you will be able to enjoy the sight of lavender and sunflower fields in full bloom.

On top of that, Hokkaido is also known for its seafood. You get to enjoy different food choices such as the delicious king crab, salmon, and sea urchin when you visit in different seasons. The first time I tasted seafood bowls in Japan was in Otaru. I never knew that sashimi and hand-rolled sushi could be so fresh and yummy, and I still miss the taste to this day!

Besides these sushi restaurants in Otaru, the Otaru Canal and the nearby warehouses, which have been turned into shops and restaurants, are also some must-see sightseeing spots. The glass industry there is flourishing, and I also picked out a few beautiful glass pieces to take back to Taiwan as souvenirs.

Each city in Hokkaido has its own distinguishing qualities, so if you have time, go check it out!
